This guitar was part of the collection of Noel Gallagher, lead singer of Oasis and a key figure in Britpop.
This particular example is from the last year of production of the D-28E model, created by Martin Guitars between 1958 and 1963 in an attempt to compete with the electric guitars of the time. However, the project didn’t succeed: the DeArmond single-coil pickups, interacting with the Brazilian Rosewood body, generated feedback that was difficult to control.
Its construction retains unique details such as the rosewood neck in a hard V shape, the original ebony fretboard with a single refret.
It also features gold Grover tuners, checkerboard binding, a wooden bridge bolted to the top with screws covered by pearloid buttons, and UFO-style knobs, which distinguish it from its predecessor, the D-18E, famous for having been used by Kurt Cobain on Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged.
More than just a guitar, this model represents a curious chapter in Martin’s history and a testament to Noel Gallagher’s musical legacy.
