This guitar began its life as an R8, a reissue of a Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Standard, before being restored and modified by renowned luthier Dave Johnson (Dave Johnson Restorations) in 2013 at the request of Mick Taylor, former guitarist of the Rolling Stones. Several modifications were made to match the look and specifications of the famous ’59 Les Paul that previously belonged to Keith Richards (AKA “Keefburst“), before passing into Taylor’s hands in 1967. He subsequently used it in recordings and shows after joining the band in 1969. The guitar was immortalized during the recording sessions for the album “Exile on Main St.“ before being stolen from the studio in France in 1972, along with other instruments.
Among the modifications, the replacement of the pickups with DMC Customs stands out. The addition of a Bigsby B7, a complete refret, replacement of the pickup rings, hardware and pickguard, plus a relicing process.
The result is a guitar that combines the heritage of the legendary Les Paul from the late ’50s, immortalized in a Rock & Roll classic, with the personal touch of Mick Taylor, a musician who left an indelible mark on rock history with his elegant, bluesy style.
