Originally designed by Laurens Hammond as a more affordable alternative to pipe organs for churches, the Hammond B3 is an iconic electromechanical organ created in 1954. It generates its sound using tone wheels and tube preamps, delivering a rich, powerful tone controlled by drawbars. It became legendary for its versatility in jazz, rock, and gospel.
Paired with a Leslie cabinet containing rotating speakers, it creates the characteristic tremolo and chorus effect that defines its sound. The B3’s sound has been immortalized by legends like Jon Lord (Deep Purple) in rock.
